Sorrento & Capri

Remember my travel diary about the Amalfi Coast? Well, the day before I went to Positano and Amalfi I was on the Island of Capri. Infamous for being the luxury vacation spot for the rich and famous.

Since staying in a hotel on the island is a bit too expensive we stayed at a hotel in Sorrento. My fondest memory from my time in Sorrento is walking around downtown trying to find a place to eat with Tori at 11pm. Almost every place was closed but that didn’t stop us. While walking we stubbled upon a restaurant that was still serving people. The staff was so nice and allowed us to order even though they were supposed to be closing.

Where I Stayed: Hotel Cristina, Via Privata Rubinacci, 6 80065 – Sant’Agnello       Amazing views of Sorrento and great breakfast!

From Sorrento, we took a ferry to the beautiful Island of Capri. The ferry dropped us off at Marina Grande, the main port in Capri.

The 30 minute ferry ride was a little rough, I must admit. Myself and a few other ended up getting sea sick. It probably didn’t help that I stuffed my self with continental breakfast right before we left.

After the boat ride to Capri, we got on another boat to ride around the island to sightsee. I know. I thought I would have to decline on taking yet another boat. Luckily, I was fine. Maybe because the boat was smaller and more open?

Faraglioni

The boat tour was absolutely incredible. I highly recommend it if you are in Capri. It was so awesome seeing the blue water and structure of the rocks. Believe it or not, our boat went THROUGH the arch in the Faraglioni rock formations. How did we not hit the sides? I have no idea.

Grotta Bianca

I didn’t get to go to the Blue Grotto because the water was too high, but the people that went the next day loved it. If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what the Blue Grotto is, it’s a small cave with glowing blue water. You can only enter the grotto on a small boat. I’ve heard some people hike to it but I’m not sure how safe it is since they are so particular with when boats can enter the cave. Make sure to ask if the grotto is open before you make the trip on foot.

Piazzetta

After the boat, I took a…I don’t even know what it was called…a tram…then a chairlift…I probably sound insane. But trust me, it was an insane experience. You must do it when you go to Capri! The chairlift is in Anacapri, and it will take you to Monte Solaro. You can take a bus marked ANACAPRI from Marina Grande or Capri Town and it will drop you off at Piazza Vittoria. This is where you can buy the tickets to get on the chairlift that takes you to the highest point of the island.

Edge of the World

Once at the top of the hill, we all took cute picture with the incredible views around us.

What I was doing it VERY dangerous. DO NOT do this unless you have people around watching you and giving you a hand. I could have easily fallen off the cliff if I slipped. You can’t see her but the friend who was taking my pictures was actually laying on the rocks so she couldn’t lose her balance. If you don’t think this is unsafe, wait until you see my Vesuvius pictures. You’ll think I lost my mind. Ya girl will do anything for the Gram.

Other Things To See/Do:

Hike down Via Krupp to Marina Piccola– Hiking is a great way to explore the island on foot. The path winds down the side of the island and ends at small private beach.

Villa Jovis– These are ruins that lie at the top of a cliff and date back to the Roman Empire. Directions from the main piazza in Capri Town: Walk along Via Le Botteghe, turn right on Via Fuorlevado, left on Via Sopramonte, then take a right on Via Tiberio. Entry fee is a few euros.

Certosa di San Giacomo– This is a 14th century Carthusian monetary with interesting architecture and views of the sea.

Some other places to see stunning views of the sea:Punta Carena Lighthouse, Phoenician Steps, Castello Barbarossa, and Tiberius’ Leap

Not sure what to buy in Capri? Anything with lemons! Lemons are all over the island and you’ll definitely notice a theme when you walk into the gift shops. A cute gift to bring home would be some lemon soap or perfumes. Don’t forget try some lemoncello or granitas!

My next travel diary will be on Pompeii/Mt.Vesuvius. Let me know if there’s any questions you want me to answer in that blog post.
